Half of the European Parliament's members are new. This is a moment for your ideas.
(Editor's note: Democracy International, which hosts Democracy Local site, has launched an Idea Laboratory for Europeans to offer their ideas on making the continent more democratic You can share your ideas, and vote on the ideas of others).
Sometimes I have the feeling that it would take magical powers to make the EU more democratic. Unfortunately I'm no Harry Potter, but, maybe there is a ‘magic moment’ right now. Because did you know that around 50% of the European Parliament is made up of new members? This magic moment, post-elections, is the perfect time to shape the European Parliament's priorities and build a more democratic future for everyone.
That’s exactly why we’ve launched the Idea Laboratory. No magic, but a space for experimentation, creativity, and fresh thinking. It's the place where we are gathering ideas for Members of European Parliament on how to improve European democracy — and we need your input!
It only takes 60 seconds to tell us your thoughts.
Should the voting age be lowered to 16? In the last EU elections, 5 countries allowed 16 and 17 year olds to vote. Wouldn't that be a suggestion for all countries?
What about having the Commission President be directly elected by the citizens? Would that be a contribution to a more democratic Europe?
What happens next?
We’ll take your ideas directly to the desk of EU policymakers. The magic of democracy happens only when many people join in and get involved. That's why we want to hear your voice to help guide democratic reforms that will improve our democracy over the next five years!
See you in the lab!
